ORDER OF THE MASS FOLLOW ALONG BOOKLET
catholic
The word “Catholic” means universal and was first used in 110 AD to describe the universal Christian Church.
procession
Is used to prepare the hearts of those who are to participate in Mass. The physical act of moving from one place to another gives the faithful a chance to get away from the world and enter into something very solemn and moving.
altar
Is elevated to represent that Heaven (and the tabernacle) is in a higher place. There are often 3 steps from the floor to the altar as a physical representation of ascending to God. The 3 steps also represent the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Calling to Mind our Faults/Failings/Sins
Matthew 5:24 “If you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."

Profession of Faith-
This is what Catholics believe.

- We kneel, posture of reverence and humility.
The Holy Spirit descends upon the offering of bread and wine to transform it into the Body and Blood of Our Lord, Jesus Christ.
(Bell ringing indicates this significant moment in the Mass.)
Lord’s Prayer-
- We stand to pray.
Sign of Peace-
Symbolizes reconciliation and unity before partaking in communion. We say “peace” or “peace be with you” just as Jesus did.
Communion-
We receive Jesus. In order to safeguard the integrity of the church’s teaching on the Eucharist and to respect the conscience of everyone involved, communion is not available to non-Catholics.
Non-Catholics may come forward to receive a blessing indicated by crossing arms across your chest.
special objects to look for around our church
Tabernacle
The word means "dwelling place". It is the wooden box behind the altar where Christ dwells among us. Catholics genuflect (kneel on one knee) toward the tabernacle out of reverence to Jesus.
Sanctuary Candle
The red candle located near the tabernacle. When the candle is lit, it indicates the presence of Christ in the tabernacle in the Eucharist.
Crucifix
Jesus on the cross depicting his crucifixion. We are reminded of the cost Jesus paid for our salvation and that we must also pick up our crosses daily to follow Jesus.
Paschal Candle
The tall candle near te Baptismal Font. A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter and used throughout the year on baptisms, funerals and other special occasions. It signifies Christ as the Light of the World.
Baptismal Font
This is located at the front right of the church and is used for baptisms. When the church is quiet, you can hear the running water.
Stations of the Cross
Series of fourteen images along the back walls of the church depicting Jesus Christ and events on the day of His crucifixion.
